Mike studied in London with Margaret Major and Peter Schidlof of the Amadeus quartet, and during this time with Peter was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play on the Macdonald Strad which is currently being auctioned with a guide price of £27 million. Since spending a few years with the Hallé orchestra, he has chosen to pursue a freelance career in order to play more chamber music and experience a greater diversity of music making. This has included touring with the likes of Dusty Springfield (with whom he appeared on Top of the Pops), Shirley Bassey, John Denver and Engelbert Humperdinck.
He has also been the viola tutor at the Manchester Metropolitan University. He currently plays on a John Lott viola of 1865, as well as a modern English instrument made for him by Paul Ayres of Manchester.
